Black-American Jews and their names

The American Jewish community includes Jews with Black-American background, many of mixed marriages. Black Jews belong to each of the major American Jewish denominations—Orthodox, Conservative, Reform—and to the smaller movements as well. Jacob lives the final 17 years of his life in Egypt. Before his passing, he asks Joseph to take an oath that he will bury him in the Holy Land. He blesses Joseph’s two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, elevating them to the status of his own sons as progenitors of tribes within the nation of Israel.

Police in Israel actively preparing for Messiah’s arrival

No one knows the day or the hour, but the Israeli police seem to believe the Messiah is coming soon. The Israeli commissioner of police, Roni Alsheikh, stated at a recent Jewish celebration that his department is preparing for the arrival of the Messiah. “When the Messiah comes, everyone will want to [approach] him so it will get very crowded,”

Wayigash (Gn 44:18–47:27)

Judah approaches Joseph to plead for the release of Benjamin, offering himself as a slave to the Egyptian ruler in Benjamin’s stead. Upon witnessing his brothers’ loyalty to one another, Joseph reveals his identity to them. “I am Joseph,” he declares. “Is my father still alive ?”
The brothers are overcome by shame and remorse, but Joseph comforts them. “It was not you who sent me here,” he says to them, “but G‑d. It has all been ordained from Above to save us, and the entire region, from famine.”
